It's The People Stupid!
I
don't believe - and never have - that there is a talent
shortage. There is a "turnover" problem that still
plagues our businesses. I see it every day in every
business I visit that relies on talent to sell a product
or deliver a service that someone else does just across
the street - where they have the same people, sell
basically the same products and services with the same
old, tired systems and enthusiasm! Why bother?

Look up and down your street and count the number of
places that sell a chicken sandwich. Why do people come
to buy yours? Maybe it is because you have super-duper
tasting chicken sandwiches? But...you can have the best
product in the world, along with the best systems to
create it, but forget the "right" people and all you
have left is the best product! Today you cannot afford
to have anything less than "A" and "B" talent in your
management staffs, kitchens, dining rooms, bars, host
stands, sales departments, etc... The good news is that
if you don't, it's not too late to upgrade your team
roster along with your business! (In fact you must get
your house in order before you start to add that "A"

The age of the customer always coming first is gone!
Talent comes first! Just see how many guests you get in
your door without it! But instead of ranking
relationships between customers and employees, we should
focus on establishing equity instead. In other words,
never treat a customer better than you do an employee.
Service, like charity, begins at home, and if you’re not
investing in serving your team as equally well as you
serve your guests, you’re headed for trouble, pure and
simple.
So
what does "A" level talent today want or need? Where do
you find them?
How do they think?
You need world-class recruiting, training,
support, and retaining efforts to find, get and keep "A"
level talent today! The talent goes to the one who can
offer all of these and not just one or two. Anything
less than a full-court press on this and the guy down
the street who is walking the walk, wins the game!
Are you utilizing the internet for recruiting? hiring?
orientation? training? retaining? Is your operation
"cool" enough to be where "A" level talent would go to
apply? How about CD's and DVD's?

needed by anyone! at anytime! Darrell Rolph, CEO
of Carlos O’Kelly’s, says it best: “Keep it fresh, keep
it focused, and remember to say thank you.”
